Measure the cost required to generate each acquisition

Cost per acquisition compares acquisition spending with completed acquisitions. Define the desired action—such as a first purchase, paid subscription, or approved application—before using the result to compare campaigns.

Formula

Cost per acquisition = total acquisition cost ÷ number of completed acquisitions.

Worked example

If $12,000 of attributable marketing and sales cost produces 300 new paying customers, acquisition cost is $40 per customer. Compare that result with contribution margin and expected customer value.

Use one acquisition definition across every channel

A trial, app install, checkout, qualified opportunity, and paying customer are different outcomes. Mixing them makes channel comparisons unreliable.

Document the counted conversion, reporting window, attribution model, and whether repeat customers are excluded. Then calculate consistently across campaigns.

Pair acquisition cost with payback and customer value

An acquisition can be affordable for a high-retention subscription and too expensive for a one-time low-margin purchase. Compare CPA or CAC with contribution, lifetime value, refund rate, and payback period.

Separate media-only acquisition cost from fully loaded acquisition cost. The fully loaded version may include sales labor, creative, agency, software, and incentives.

CPA calculation checklist

  • Define the exact acquisition event.
  • Match cost and acquisition windows.
  • Use a consistent attribution model.
  • Compare the result with contribution and payback period.
