What this calculator measures

A part-to-whole percentage expresses one number relative to a comparison base. Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. The label and denominator matter as much as the arithmetic.

This tool answers 'what percentage is the part of the whole?' It does not calculate percentage change or a percentage of a number, which use related but different arrangements of the values.

Percentage = Part ÷ Whole × 100

The whole is the comparison base and cannot be zero.

Worked example

If 25 orders out of 200 eligible orders use a coupon, 25 ÷ 200 × 100 = 12.5%. The result describes coupon use relative to the 200-order base. Changing the base to customers or sessions would answer a different question.

Scenario comparison

45 out of 180 is 25%.

If the whole rises to 225 and the part stays 45, the percentage falls to 20%.

How to interpret the result

A percentage can exceed 100% when the part is larger than the whole. That may be meaningful, but check that the quantities share compatible units and definitions.

When comparing percentages from groups of very different sizes, also review the underlying counts. A large percentage movement from a small base may represent few observations.
