Marketplace Minimum Price and Returns Risk

Set a contribution break-even price and stress-test the loss associated with returned orders.

How to use these calculators

A marketplace listing should not be priced from product cost alone. First account for percentage fees, fixed seller charges, shipping and advertising on each order. Then test whether expected returns erase that contribution. The return model uses a separate unrecoverable loss estimate to avoid treating a return as a normal completed sale.

A worked scenario

Costs $18 product + $6 fulfillment + $1 fixed fees + $4 ads, 12% seller fee; kept-order profit $16, returned-order loss $10, return rate 5%.

Minimum cent-rounded break-even listing price: $32.96; expected contribution with returns: $14.70/order.

Returns and seller fees affect different stages of the decision. Keep the assumptions explicit and avoid using a universal platform rate.

How to plan this decision

  1. Separate fee types

Confirm which fees scale with price and which are fixed per order.

  2. Calculate realistic return losses

Use net unrecoverable cost after resale and refunds, not the sticker price automatically.

  3. Test lower margins

Increase fee rates or return shares to see when an apparently safe price becomes fragile.
